Merit Based Incentive Payment Systems (MIPS) is a modified fee for service model approved by MACRA to consolidate the former reporting programs, (Physician Quality Reporting System, Value Based Modifier, Meaningful Use), to provide greater flexibility. ASPR Posts Resources On New CMS Emergency Rule Compliance
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' new emergency preparedness requirements went into effect Nov. 15, 2016, with participating facilities given one year to comply. The rule applies to 17 provider types, and specific requirements are adjusted based on classification. The Department of Health & Human Services Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response has developed a new resource to help facilities comply with the rule, including a chart that highlights requirements by provider type.

AHRQ Toolkit to Protect Safety of Intensive Care Patients On Ventilators
AHRQ's new Toolkit to Improve Safety for Mechanically Ventilated Patients is available to help hospitals improve safety for mechanically ventilated patients in intensive care units (ICUs). The toolkit consists of four modules and other resources for improving care of mechanically ventilated patients.

Vancomycin Hydrochloride for Injection, USP by Hospira: Recall
Hospira, Inc. is voluntarily recalling one lot of Vancomycin Hydrochloride for Injection, USP (NDC: 0409-6510-01, Lot 591053A, Expiry Date 1NOV2017), to the hospital/retail level due to a confirmed customer report for the presence of particulate matter within a single vial. The product is packaged in a carton containing 1x100 mL vial. The lot was distributed from August 2016 through September 2016 in the United States.

CMS Issues Guidance On Implementing MOON
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has updated its Medicare claims processing manual to include guidance on implementing the Medicare Outpatient Observation Notice, a standard notice that all hospitals and critical access hospitals must provide effective March 8 to all Medicare beneficiaries who receive outpatient observation services for more than 24 hours.
CMS issued the final policies for implementing the NOTICE Act last August with the inpatient prospective payment system final rule, but delayed implementation until 90 days after the updated MOON was posted.

CMS Webinar Feb. 9 On New Medicare Bundled Payment Model
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will host a webinar on February 9 regarding its new payment model to bundle payment to acute care hospitals for heart attack and cardiac bypass surgery services beginning in July 2017. The final rule, issued last month, also will expand the existing Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement model to include other surgical treatments for hip and femur fractures beyond hip replacement.
