FDA Proposes Ban on Most Powdered Medical Gloves 
The Food and Drug Administration yesterday issued a proposed rule that would ban most powdered medical gloves in the United States. According to the agency, aerosolized glove powder on natural rubber latex gloves can carry proteins that may cause respiratory allergic reactions, while powdered synthetic gloves are associated with airway and wound inflammation and post-surgical adhesions, which are bands of fibrous scar tissue that form between internal organs and tissues.

FDA Approves Emergency Use of New Zika Diagnostic Tool
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced last Friday, that  the Food and Drug Administration has issued an Emergency Use Authorization for a new diagnostic tool that can detect whether an individual is currently infected with chikungunya, dengue or Zika, instead of having to perform separate tests for each virus.

Sentinel Event Statistics Updated, Released Through End of 2015
The Joint Commission updated its sentinel event statistics through the end of 2015. They reviewed a total of 936 sentinel events through the end of 2015. The 10 most frequently reported types of sentinel events and the 10 most frequently identified root causes (spanning several types of events) are shown in the Joint Commission’s release.

FDA Safety Communication: Olympus Duodenoscope Models TJF-160F and TJF-160VF Reprocessing Instructions Validated
Olympus Corporation of the Americas (Olympus) has issued updated, validated manual reprocessing instructions for the TJF-160F and TJF-160VF duodenoscope models (160 F/VF duodenoscope models) to replace those provided in the original device labeling. The FDA reviewed the updated reprocessing instructions and the validation data and determined that they meet the Agency's expectations.
