FDA Awards MDIC $3 million for NEST Coordinating Center
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has awarded the Medical Device Innovation Consortium (MDIC) $3 million in seed funding to establish the Coordinating Center for the Medical Device National Evaluation System for health Technology (NEST). This award will operationalize the Coordinating Center for NEST.
NEST will help improve the quality of real-world evidence that healthcare providers and patients can use to make better informed treatment decisions and strike the right balance between assuring safety and fostering device innovation and patient access.

MDIC Case for Quality Program – New Report Released
AHRMM is one of the representatives on the MDIC Product Quality Outcomes Analytics project team; a multi-disciplinary group comprised of representatives from manufacturers, providers, FDA, and Value Analysis Committees (VACs).
Check out the recently released report, which includes the team’s observations and recommendations for the development of a formal approach to measure medical device product quality outcomes in order to provide feedback and reward the market for Quality.
Oct. 1 Deadline for New Participants in Medicare EHR Incentive Program
Eligible professionals, hospitals and critical access hospitals participating in the Medicare Electronic Health Records Incentive Program for the first time in 2016 must attest to meaningful use for a continuous 90-day reporting period by Oct. 1 to avoid a payment adjustment in 2017. All returning participants currently must report for a full calendar year, although Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services recently proposed a 90-day reporting period and will communicate any changes to the program once final. ONC Announces New Health IT Resources
As part of National Health IT Week, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology yesterday released two new resources to help healthcare providers implement and use health IT. The Health IT Playbook offers implementation strategies, recommendations and best practices from a variety of clinical settings. The electronic health record contracting guide offers strategies to help providers compare EHRs and negotiate key terms with EHR vendors. ONC will review the new resources during a webinar Sept. 30 at 2 p.m. ET. To register for the webinar, click here.

CMS to Hold Public Call to Discuss New Emergency Preparedness Rule
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Medical Learning Network (MLN) is hosting a public call Oct. 5 at 1:30 p.m. ET to discuss CMS’ new Emergency Preparedness Requirement.
The rule establishes national requirements for Medicare and Medicaid providers on how to plan for both natural and man-made disasters. The call will start with a discussion of the new requirements and revisions in the final rule, followed by a question-and-answer session. The call presentation will be posted at least one day in advance on the MLN website. Registration closes at noon ET the day of the call.

CDC Releases Cybersecurity Discussion Guide for Hospitals, Healthcare
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released a discussion guide to help hospitals and healthcare organizations identify issues to address when responding to a cyber breach or attack. The guide includes scenarios and questions to facilitate small group discussions on the issue for cybersecurity preparedness and response planning.
