CMS Issues Corrections to FY 2017 Inpatient/LTCH Final Rule
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Friday issued a correction notice to the fiscal year 2017 inpatient and long-term care hospital prospective payment system final rule, which corrects errors and inadvertent omissions of several diagnosis and procedure codes related to the FY 2017 Medicare Severity-Diagnosis Related Group and MS-Long-Term Care-DRG updates.

Joint Commission to Delete 51 Elements of Performance
In Phase II of its Elements of Performance (EP) review project, the Joint Commission is deleting 51 EPs to which healthcare facilities no longer will have to adhere beginning January 2017.

Zika Virus Updates
On September 30, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released an updated interim plan for responding to locally acquired cases of Zika virus infection in the continental U.S. and Hawaii. The CDC also issued an updated guidance for pre-pregnancy counseling and preventing sexual transmission of Zika

President Obama last Thursday signed legislation funding federal programs through Dec. 9 and providing $1.1 billion in emergency funding for the Department of Health and Human Services and other agencies to combat Zika.

HRET Awarded Contract to Improve Patient Safety
As part of AHA’s commitment to quality, AHA’s Health Research and Educational Trust (HRET) was chosen as one of 16 organizations for the new Hospital Improvement Innovation Network, or HIIN. This new effort builds upon the work of the two previous, successful Hospital Engagement Network projects. The HRET contract award will span two years with an option for a third.
AHA President and CEO Rick Pollack joined Patrick Conway, M.D., CMS Acting Principal Deputy Administrator and Chief Medical Officer, for the press announcement on Sept. 29.
The vast majority of hospitals and state hospital associations will be participating in this program.
“America’s hospitals embrace the ambitious new goals CMS has proposed,” Pollack said. “AHA and our members intend to keep an unrelenting focus on providing better, safer care to our patients—working in close partnership with the federal government and with each other.”
