CMS Releases Final 2017 Physician Payment Rule
On November 2, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services issued its final rule for the physician fee schedule for calendar year 2017. The final rule updates payment policies and payment rates for services furnished under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (PFS) on or after January 1, 2017. Read the full release from CMS.

CMS Finalizes OPPS/ASC Changes for 2017
On November 1, CMS released the 2017 hospital outpatient prospective payment system (OPPS) and ambulatory surgical center (ASC) payment system policy changes, quality provisions, and payment rates final rule with comment period (CMS-1656-FC). CMS is also implementing Section 603 of the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015, which requires certain off-campus provider-based hospital outpatient departments that began billing on or after Nov. 2, 2015 will no longer be paid under OPPS. CMS Posts Final Hospital VBP Program Adjustment Factors for FY 2017
Last Tuesday, CMS posted the final incentive payment adjustment factors for the fiscal year 2017 Hospital Value-Based Purchasing Program, which are being used to adjust base operating Medicare Severity Diagnosis-Related Group payments to eligible hospitals for discharges this year. To view the final FY 2017 adjustment factors, see Table 16B at www.cms.gov.

CDC FAQ for Hospitals Notifying Patients of Heater-Cooler Device Risk
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released frequently asked questions for hospitals notifying patients of risk from potentially contaminated heater-cooler devices used during cardiac surgery. The FAQs, which were added to a CDC toolkit for notifying clinicians and patients, address questions such as how far back in time hospitals should go to notify patients.
