7. WHO Declares Sierra Leone Free of Ebola Virus
The World Health Organization on Saturday declared Sierra Leone free of Ebola virus transmission. The announcement  marked 42 days (two 21-day incubation periods) since the release of the last known Ebola patient from a Sierra Leone treatment unit. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said U.S. government partners will continue to help the country assist survivors and rebuild its public health infrastructure. “With the support of CDC and many other partners, Sierra Leone has a stronger disease surveillance and response system in place for suspected Ebola cases, and the country remains vigilant in its efforts to stay at zero cases,” CDC said.

8. House Subcommittee Approves Mental Health Legislation
The House Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee last Wednesday voted 18-12 to approve a substitute amendment to the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act (H.R. 2646), legislation authored by Reps. Tim Murphy (R-PA) and Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) to reform elements of the nation’s mental health system. In a letter  to the subcommittee, the AHA voiced support for a provision that would allow states to use federal Medicaid funds to cover services for adults in inpatient psychiatric hospitals. Among other comments, AHA voiced support for language authored by Rep. Doris Matsui (D-CA) requiring the Health and Human Services Secretary to clarify what information providers may disclose to parents and caregivers in certain situations. The bill now moves to the full Energy and Commerce Committee for further consideration. Sens. Chris Murphy (D-CT) and Bill Cassidy (R-LA) have introduced a similar bill, which Health, Education, Labor & Pensions Committee Chairman Lamar Alexander has said the committee will take up early next year.

9. CDC Challenge Seeks Better Ways to Prevent Healthcare-Associated Blood Clots
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week announced a competition to recognize hospitals and managed care organizations for innovative and successful strategies to prevent venous thromboembolism, blood clots occurring as deep vein thrombosis and/or pulmonary embolism. The agency encourages U.S. and international health care systems to submit evidence of successful prevention strategies and interventions through Jan. 10. A panel of judges from CDC and other Health and Human Services agencies will recognize up to seven Healthcare-Associated Venous Thromboembolism Prevention Champions, who will receive cash awards of $10,000. “Doctors and nurses in hospitals and other healthcare settings can save lives by implementing the best practices discovered through this challenge,” said CDC Director Tom Frieden, M.D. “‎Tell us about what you are doing and what’s helping prevent blood clots, so we can advance science and save lives together.”
